Thyroid is a very sensitive gland and so are the medications you take for Hypothyroidism. These mediations can react with certain minerals, supplements and foods. It is advisable you take Thyroid medications first thing in the morning, with empty stomach, and do not eat for at least one hour.
There are certain foods, minerals and medications which can interfere with thyroid medications and I recommend to avoid them if you have hypothyroidism. If you have to take them take them in modest amount and eat them in the evenings or at night.
These foods, minerals , medications are:
- Soya and soya beans
- Walnuts
- Food with Cotton seed
- Calcium
- Iron ( including iron containing multi vitamin)
- Aluminum and /or Magnesium containing medications like antacids.
- Sucralfate (Carafaten)
- Cholestyramine (Questran)
- Colestipol (Colestid)
- Goitrogens
What are Goitrogenis ?
There are substances mostly in food variety in nature and they can harm your thyroid. It is recommended they should be avoided not only by thyroid patients but also by people with normal thyroid but are at risk, as a preventive measure, especially if there is a family history of thyroid diseases or there is a community incidences of thyroid disorders more then other communities..
Some of the more common goitrogens are the following:
•African cassava
•Babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit found in Brazil and Africa)
•Bok choy
•Broccoli
•Broccolini
•Brussels sprouts
•Cabbage
•Cauliflower
•Chinese Broccoli
•Collards
•Daikon
•Kale
•Kohlrabi
•Millet
•Mustard
•Peaches
•Peanuts
•Pine nuts
•Radishes
•Red Radish
•Rutabaga
•Spinach
•Strawberries
•Turnipsnt
•Watercress
These foods interfere with Thyroid Functions in many ways. They interfere with Thyroid iodine uptake which makes thyroid Iodine deficient . Iodine is the main food for thyroid and is an important part of its normal structure. Iodine has ant proliferative and antineoplastic property. Iodine deficiency gives the swelling of thyroid known as a goiter.
Goitrogenic foods also interfere with enzyme process needed for formation of T4, T3 and for conversion of T 4 to T 3.
Role of gluten free and Paleo diets for thyroid patients :
I consider wheat also cause hypothyroidism by formation of anti bodied (Hashimoto's disease) This antibodies formation occur especially if a person has genetic predisposition. In my clinical practice I have seen some thyroid patients especially with Hashimoto's feel much better after starting gluten free diet even when their tests are negative for celiac diseases. Some do better on paleo diet.
In our next post we will discuss food, nutrition and supplements etc. which can energize you and your thyroid
