HARMS OF SYTHROID (LEVOTHYROXINE)
www.drtahirmd.com  www.holisticthyroidmd.com
Synthroid is synthetic product and has only T4. It is given in a hope T4 will convert to T3 which is the thyroid product mostly works for cell metabolism.
It T3 is not provided , patients will remain hypothyroid along with all it's serious consequences to every cell and every organ of the body. If a patient has conversion from T4 to T3 problem, his/her T3 will stay low and this could put patient to the danger of Thyroid efficiency. In addition normal thyroid produces many other substances like T2 , diuretic substance etc. . Giving Synthroid will deprive body from all these natural thyroid substances.
Giving Armour thyroid or Nature Thyroid will avoid most of these problems. Alternatively giving T4/ T3 mixture will provide both T4 and T3 and will eliminate deficiency state.

YOUR TESTS ARE NORMAL, BUT YOU STILL FEEL LOUSY
- WHAT IS WRONG?

You are feeling lousy all the time. You are tired, you cannot concentrate at your work, you are
getting slow in thinking and  at your  work.  You go to your doctor for an answer.  Your
doctor checks on you,  does  some lab tests , and they all came out negative. You are told
you are healthy and there is nothing wrong with you . You are puzzled. You do not feel well
and you are told there is nothing wrong  with you.  You hear many things from different people:

"Do not worry. There is nothing wrong with you."
" You are stressed  our. Relax. Take a vacation"
" It is just aging process. You have to accept it"
"You don't  eat well"
"Do more exercise"
" It is midlife  crises. You have to accept it"
"It is all in your head".
" You are crazy. May be little anti-depressant, anti- psychotic, anti- anxiety, or sleep pill can
help."
"You are finding excuses, these is nothing wrong with you".
"You are lying.  You are faking. You are making excuses, You do not want to work". Etc., etc.

This is a common story I hear from the patients who come to me for help.

But LISTEN, it may not be your fault . Your thyroid could be causing all these problems, but
unfortunately it could be  missed by your doctor. It is easy to miss  or misdiagnosed thyroid
issues.. That is why, I call it a silent killer. According  to Broda Barnes MD( who used fasting
temperature as a part of thyroid evaluation and he is author of famous book: Hypothyroidism:
The Unsuspected Illness), more then  40 percent of Americans  may be  having thyroid
problem  and  many may not  know it. Problems are:  Symptoms of thyroid diseases  could
be so vague .misleading and resemble to many other common diseases, that  unless

a physician keep this in the  back of his/her mind and take  proper history and do appropriate
examination ( which  is hard in insurance led medical practices) , thyroid issues can be easily
missed , misdiagnosed  for other conditions and treated for other conditions which are not present
and this can cause real harm to the  patient. David  Brownstein  MD  describes the case of his father
in his book , " Overcoming Thyroid Disorders" . His father  was   wrongly diagnosed and wrongly treated
for coronary artery  disease, and he underwent  unnecessary invasive procedures like angiogram
etc., while in fact he had hypothyroidism . After  proper treatment of hypothyrodism he improved
and lived many healthy years afterwards..  Broda Barnes MD has describes many similar  cases
as well.

Another issue is most commonly test used to exclude hypothyroid is TSH, which  may miss some
patients especially poor T4 to T3 converters. Also  normal value of TSH  is not wellestablished.
Different doctors interpret TSH differently. According to Dr. Brownstein,  since doctors started relying
on TSH alone as an indicator of thyroid disease, many cases of hypothyroidism have been missed.
Consequently, not only are cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity on the rise but also new
mysterious diseases like chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia on rise.

Some of the signs and symptoms of  hypothyroidism you should remember are :

-macroglossia (big tongue)
-pale skin-loss of smell or taste
-slow speech-thinning hair and/or eyebrows-sensitivity to cold
-muscle weakness
-tenderness
-stiffness
-yellow skin
-headaches
-poor memory-mental fog
-depression
-mental slowness
-acne
-atherosclerosis(hardening of arteries)
-high cholesterol-arthritis
-constipation
-eczema
-psoriasis
-cold extremities
-voice changes
-fatigue especially in the morning-infertility
-menstrual problems
-paresthesia (numbness)
-carpel tunnel
-ovarian cysts
-anemia
-preorbital edema ( swelling around the eyes)
-proptosis (bulging eyes)-dry skin
-bugging eyes
-puffy face
-goiter (swelling in front of your neck)
-hypotension or -hypertension
-slow reflexes

However hypothyroiism may present in may other sneaky ways. One important thing I tell my patients is, to take fasting vitals. Low temperature with usually low pulse (sometimes high) indicate possibility of hypothyroidism.

Early diagnosis and treatment is very crucial. Thyroid hormone is important  for  metabolism to
every cell which maintains cellular energy and cellular  functions.
Hypothyroidism , if not treated can
damage every cell, and every organ of the body , most serious being heart irregularity, heart failure ,
mental retardation and dementia.

If you or your love one  has  hypothyroidism and  take thyroid supplements, you.... MUST.... read this....
__________________________________________________________

Thyroid is a very sensitive gland and so are the medications you take for Hypothyroidism. These mediations can react with certain minerals, supplements and foods.
It is advisable you take Thyroid medications  first thing in the morning, with empty stomach, and do not eat for at least one hour.
There are certain foods,  minerals  and medications which can interfere with thyroid medications and I recommend to avoid them if you have hypothyroidism. If  you have to take  them take them in modest amount and eat them in the evenings or at night.
These foods, minerals , medications are:
- Soya and soya beans
- Walnuts
- Food with Cotton seed
- Calcium
- Iron ( including iron containing multi vitamin)
- Aluminum and /or  Magnesium containing  medications  like antacids.
- Sucralfate (Carafaten)
- Cholestyramine (Questran)
- Colestipol (Colestid)
- Goitrogens

What are Goitrogenis  ?
There  are  substances mostly in  food variety in nature and they  can harm your thyroid. It is recommended they should be avoided not only by thyroid patients but also by people with normal thyroid  but  are at risk, as a  preventive measure, especially if there is a  family history of thyroid diseases or there is a community  incidences of   thyroid disorders more then other communities..

Some of the more common  goitrogens are  the following:
•African cassava
•Babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit found in Brazil and Africa)
•Bok choy
•Broccoli
•Broccolini
•Brussels sprouts
•Cabbage
•Cauliflower
•Chinese Broccoli
•Collards
•Daikon
•Kale
•Kohlrabi
•Millet
•Mustard
•Peaches
•Peanuts
•Pine nuts
•Radishes
•Red Radish
•Rutabaga
•Spinach
•Strawberries
•Turnipsnt
•Watercress

These foods interfere with Thyroid Functions in many ways. They interfere with Thyroid iodine uptake  which  makes  thyroid Iodine deficient . Iodine  is the  main food for thyroid and  is  an  important part of its normal structure. Iodine has ant proliferative and antineoplastic property. Iodine deficiency gives the swelling of thyroid known as  a goiter.
Goitrogenic foods also interfere with enzyme process needed  for formation  of T4, T3 and for conversion of T 4 to T 3.

Role of gluten free and Paleo diets for thyroid patients :
I  consider wheat  also cause  hypothyroidism by formation of anti bodied (Hashimoto's disease) This antibodies formation occur  especially if a person has genetic predisposition. In my clinical practice I have seen some thyroid patients especially  with Hashimoto's  feel much better after starting  gluten free diet even when their tests are negative for celiac diseases. Some do better on paleo diet.

In our next post we will discuss   food, nutrition  and supplements etc.  which can energize you and your thyroid
